What is a Vehicle Appraisal?

Generally a vehicle appraisal is an appraised value of your vehicle based on the condition, age, make/model and supply/demand of your vehicle. It is not a mechanical inspection.

The Appraisal consists of a thorough evaluation of key areas of your vehicle. Including Paint & Body, Accessories, Glass & Trim, Tires & Wheels, Interior, Engine & Transmission, Exhaust, Trunk as well as the Underside of your vehicle.

Along with various other considerations, your vehicle is compared to similar vehicles in similar condition. Including the degree and quality of restoration (if any) and presence of any damage existing at the time of your appraisal. This will come from price guides, auctions and sales listings etc. The report will be a comprehensive 8-10 page report along with a minimum of 15 photos of the vehicle.

Enjoy competitive prices and discounts for multiple vehicles and appraisals done at-office.

Please note that vehicles should be clean and outside of any garage and in natural light, preferably on a sunny day. For this reason, my auto appraisals can only be done between sunrise and sunset.

Do I Need a Professional Vehicle Appraisal?

If your vehicle is at least 15 years old and you believe it may be worth more than what your current insurance company would give you in the event of damage or loss etc. then you should consider a professional appraisal by a knowledgeable collector car appraiser. Check with your insurance company if your policy has a ’19A’. This is an endorsement to your policy for an agreed value of your auto.

You are also required to get an auto appraisal by the MTO if you purchase a vehicle that is 20 years old or more.

Generally, insurance companies will require an appraisal every 3-5 years. Note that if your vehicle is 25 years old or more, the value may go up every year. Values have also changed in the post-covid world.

Lastly, if you have made major modifications to your vehicle, an appraisal should be done. Yearly appraisals will receive a discount.

New Purchase Appraisals

If you have just purchased an older car or truck and it is at least 20 years old, the MTO requires an independent appraisal.

In addition, if you just purchased a Classic, Antique or Special Interest car and it is 20 years old or in some cases 15 years old or more, your insurance company will ask you for an appraisal. If not, your insurance company will tell you they can’t insure it because they don’t recognize the 19A endorsement (Endorsement to your policy for an agreed value of your vehicle). There are various Insurance Brokers (Zehr, Vintage, Crosslands etc.) that will find Insurance companies that will insure your vehicle.

Existing Vehicle Appraisal

Most insurance companies will notify you when you need a new appraisal. Some are requested every 3 – 5 years, and some are longer.

If you have done major mechanical or body modifications etc., you should notify your insurance company and they will ask that you get a new appraisal done.

If your vehicle is 25 years old or more, the value may change yearly and a therefore a yearly appraisal is worth considering.
